For refugees, living in the United States presents great opportunities and challenges. Learning a new language, delving into the details of American culture, and figuring out how to get around are some of the most significant difficulties for refugees. For the retired and elderly, these challenges are magnified. Elderly refugees often face isolation while their children and grandchildren are away at work and school. They are often unable to participate in an English immersion environment to facilitate the quick acquisition of language.

In response to the challenges faced by Elder Refugees, Lutheran Community Services Northwest offers the Elder Empowerment Program. The Elder Empowerment program is offered to all refugees aged 55 and older and living in Vancouver. The program offers monthly lunches for the elders and educational workshops that assist them in living more independently, accessing critical services, and maintaining their health and quality of life. Additionally, each year, the participants go on a field trip to a local attraction such as the Portland Zoo or other fun places.

The Elder Empowerment program offers workshops each month on a variety of topics to promote independence, self-sufficiency, social opportunities, and mental health. Lutheran Community Services Northwest partners with Loaves and Fishes to offer a free lunch at each workshop.

• Social Services
• Healthy Eating
• Safety
• Financial Security
• Will Preparation/Planning
• Fitness and Wellness
