What Is the Senior Companion Program?

Senior Companion Program

“It feels good to be needed again!
It keeps me young, even at 68!”
A Senior Companion

Put simply, the Senior Companion Program is senior volunteers helping other seniors and people with disabilities in their community.

The Senior Companion Program is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service. The goal of the program is to provide valuable volunteer opportunities to seniors while providing companionship and support services to individuals in need, allowing them to live more independently. Specific services may include transportation to medical appointments and essential shopping.

Partnering with organizations in Pierce and Kitsap County, the program matches low-income volunteers with vulnerable seniors and disabled adults in our community. Senior Companions must be 55 or older, and qualify based on their income. Companions go through an application process and special training program before being matched with seniors or individuals with disabilities. We are currently looking for volunteers who can drive, have their own car and car insurance.

Volunteers receive a tax-free stipend, as well as mileage and meal reimbursement.

“Our mission has two parts: to provide assistance to frail, homebound elderly and disabled adults, and to enhance the lives of low income seniors through an enriching volunteer opportunity in the community. In doing so we make the community a better place to live.”
