Who We Are
The refugee experience is complex and contains numerous traumas and stressors. Refugees often experience violence, malnutrition, and imprisonment. They leave behind family and friends to move to the US, which has new values, norms, laws, climate, dress, food, housing, and work. The direct result of this volatile combination of past trauma and adjustment stress is emotional distress.
International Counseling and Community Services (ICCS) has been working to address the mental health and adjustment needs of area refugees for over twenty years by offering bicultural/bilingual mental health services. The staff of ICCS includes bilingual counselors and case managers, as well as a cross-cultural psychiatrist. When possible, we attempt to match clients with professionals who share the same native language and culture of their client. If the client is from a background where there is no trained native language counselor, we accommodate the client with the use of interpreters, or refer onto another, better-matched agency.
ICCS recognizes that what affects a refugee’s mental health is often unmet critical service needs. Therefore, we offer more than traditional counseling services. Our services include:
 |
- Social services including naturalization support, housing assistance, and advocating for clients with large institutions like DSHS and Social Security.
- Medical case management including helping clients find appropriate health care providers and manage their healthcare.
- Adjustment support including outreach, information, and referral.
- Psychiatric medical treatment and consultations.

ICCS also accepts English-speaking clients.
ICCS accepts Medicaid and usually our services our provided at no cost to qualified clients. Our counseling program is approved by the Council on Accreditation, and is recognized as a Licensed Mental Health Center by the State of Washington.
ICCS has two convenient sites – one in the downtown corridor and the other located at our new facility in SeaTac. We are also available for home visit, or can order DSHS transportation for those clients who receive Medicaid. Initial appointments can be made by calling the ICCS main number at 206-694-5797.
