S.T.A.R.S.
The purpose of Washington STARS (State Training and Registry System) is to ensure quality care for all children in our state through increased opportunities for basic and on-going training for child care and early educaton and school-age providers.
Training Requirements
20-Hour Basic Training
All family child care providers, child care and school-age center directors, program supervisors, lead teachers, and site coordinators are required to complete a 20-hour two credit basic STARS course within the first six months of becoming employed or licensed. This course meets specific learning outcomes in child growth and development, child guidance, and health and safety.
Continuing Education — 10 Hours Annually
After meeting the 20-hour training requirement, 10 hours of continuing education is required annually of STARS participants. This requirement starts the calendar year after the year in which the participant should have completed the 20-hour training requirement.
Training meets STARS requirements if provided by an appropriately approved STARS trainer or organization or is a college class designed to meet the STARS requirements.
