If “joy is love dancing” as Marty Richards suggests, there were 107 hearts dancing in on Sunday November 8 at the Kitsap Peninsula Convention Center in downtown Bremerton.
Marty Richards, author of Caresharing, presented the keynote address at the annual Lutheran Community Services Northwest Brunch. Her talk centered on joy found through service, and she eloquently described important differences between “helping” and “serving.” “Service,” she said, “goes both ways.” She told stories of her walk through life caring for others and of joy that caregivers receive – part of the two-way street called “service.” Area Director Trudy Sorensen echoed the same sentiment with a story about a joyful experience she had during a recent visit to the Adult Day program in Bremerton. Trudy noted, “Services is a third of our agency’s name.”
Honored for her service to LCS and to her church, Silverdale Lutheran, Hilma Bridges was presented with the “Helen Norris Service Award” and was visibly touched by the recognition and a standing ovation. She received a hand-blown glass platter from Tacoma’s Hilltop Artists youth glass shop in recognition of her 28 years of faithful service to LCS. The citation for Hilma noted her humble and generous heart and that she is, “someone who brings beauty into the lives of others.” Hilma was joined by five tables from Silverdale Lutheran Church where she is a member. Silverdale Lutheran is also the site of the Adult Day Program, for which she volunteers.
Beth Cornish and Cheri Kendall shared their gifts of handbells, performing“A Celebration of Thanksgiving” while those present filled out pledge cards and made gifts to support LCS. Approximately $20,000 was raised to benefit our agency’s programs and services on the Kitsap Penninsula.
Thanks so much to our generous sponsors and gracious givers for helping make our brunch a success!
