What are Adult Day Centers?

Adult Day Centers provide a structured social setting where frail and disabled adults can participate in educational, recreational and social activities.

Our on-site staff and trained volunteers provide a safe, secure and structured environment. Each site provides social interaction, entertainment and a shared noon meal, as well as individual attention. This allows family caregivers time to run errands, take care of personal appointments, or relax with friends and family.

Seniors and disabled adults who spend time with others can avoid being isolated from society.
Family caregivers receive a break from day to day care giving.
Participants can enjoy an array of activities.
Programs such as Adult Day Centers can help delay or prevent individuals from having to be placed in a care facility.

This group of seniors is getting their “sitter-size” in a safe, structured environment.

“Volunteers give each site a feeling of neighbor helping neighbor. SOS is beneficial for both the caregiver and their loved ones.”

Gail Hiestand, Administrator
Kitsap County Division of Aging
and Long Term Care

Senior and Adult Outreach Services provides opportunities not only for seniors or disabled adults and their families in need of a hand, but for those looking for a chance to make a real difference in their community.

Qualified volunteers are trained and supervised by Lutheran Community Services staff. Internship opportunities for students are available.

A typical day

Staff and volunteers arrive to set up for the day around 9 :00 a.m. Some clients may arrive early, and we want to be ready for them! As clients arrive, we welcome them, and share a morning snack while sharing some social time. This is when we get a chance to find out what is happening in each other’s lives.

By 10:30 a.m., our clients have arrived, and are ready for our first activity. Some days this is a game, and other days it is a craft. Our volunteers enjoy spending this time with the clients!

Exercise is an important part of every ones life. We “sitter-size”, which is exercising while sitting in a chair. This includes stretching and tossing a ball around. Not only does this help everyone stay in better physical shape, we have fun doing it together!

After a full morning, it’s time for a break, and lunch. Listening to music, and sharing a great meal is good socialization for all of us.

Once lunch is done, we share Sing-a-long time. Then, we may finish our morning craft, play bingo, or share another game. The first buses arrive at 2:00 p.m. to take our clients home, but some clients will stay later.

Loneliness and isolation are two of the key problems facing seniors and people with disabilities. Sharing an activity or hobby with others helps keep them connected to society.
