Take the initiative! Grab the bull by the horns! Seize the moment! I like the quote by David Mahoney: “There comes a moment when you have to stop revving up the car and shove it into gear!” Mother Teresa said, “If you can’t feed 1,000 people, then feed one!” In other words, DO SOMETHING!
Initiative is defined as: the power, ability, or instinct to begin or to follow through with a plan or task. My favorite definition is: “taking the first step”. The Chinese have a saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” While it may not be a journey of 1,000 miles (though it can seem like it), let’s apply this to making your will.
If you do not have a will, or it needs to be updated, take the initiative, grab the bull by the horns, seize the moment, shove it into gear, do something! It takes initiative to overcome inertia, reluctance and procrastination, and there are few areas more prone to such inaction than making your will.
If you don’t take the initiative and make a will, the state will do it for you. What you have will be divided according to a formula, without taking into account any special needs of your family, or your personal wishes. The state certainly won’t include any of your favorite non-profits and their good works. How could they when there is no way of knowing what you wanted?
If you haven’t already made your will, or it needs to be updated, take that first step, take the initiative, just do it, and while doing it, please remember the good work of Lutheran Community Services Northwest.
