Some of the most frequently asked questions about our adoption program
are:
What does your agency do?
A:
The Division of Children & Family
Services (DCFS) is part of the Department of Social and Health Services
(DSHS). Adoption Services are provided throughout the state. For
more specific information contact your local DCFS office.
We are committed to finding and preparing families to provide
permanent homes for children being served by our agency. Children
in need of permanent homes are the primary clients of the agency’s
adoption program.
What do I/we have to do to qualify to adopt a child through
your agency?
1. Attend an adoption parent preparation program
approved by this agency, such as the ones listed on the training
schedules attached or call the contact name listed in your letter
from Families for Kids Recruitment Resources.
2. After completing a preparation class, submit a completed application
packet.
3. Receive an approved adoption homestudy.
During the homestudy process, this agency carefully assesses a family’s
ability to parent our children. We consider the unique individual
strengths, circumstances, and issues of each family who applies for
our services.
How long will it take to have a child placed in my/our home?
This
is determined in large part by matching the specific needs of a child/children
to the specific needs, interests, and abilities of your family. The
amount of time varies, but it is usually 6 – 18
months.
What are the costs of adoption through your agency?
We
have no agency service fees. Adoptive parents are responsible for
the legal fees involved in finalizing the adoption in court. These
fees are reimbursed if your child/children is/are eligible to receive
Adoption Support Services.
Are there any services available after the adoption is final?
Adoption
Support Services is available through the State if your child/family
meets program eligibility criteria. Services may include medical,
counseling, reimbursement of legal fees, and some financial maintenance.
An Adoption Support Agreement must be authorized before an adoption
is finalized. |
